Residents of a block of apartments in central Stockholm are facing an uncertain future after a severe fire ravaged part of the building last week. The incident, which occurred on a quiet Tuesday afternoon, led to the evacuation of about fifty people, who are now impatiently waiting to return to their homes.
“We just want to go back home,” said Maria Andersson, one of the tenants. “The waiting is exhausting and we don’t know what the next steps are.”
The fire department responded quickly, but the blaze had already spread through several floors before it was brought under control. Structural damage has left many apartments unsafe to inhabit, and assessments are ongoing.
“It’s a difficult process,” acknowledged John Eriksson, a fire department official. “Safety is our top priority, but we understand the frustration of those affected. Our team is working tirelessly to ensure the building is safe for re-entry.”
While temporary housing solutions have been provided for those displaced, many are uneasy and eager for a resolution. Local authorities have promised regular updates, but a timeline for returning to the apartments remains unclear.
