The Moderate Party has decided to withdraw from the agreement regarding the construction of 140,000 new homes in Stockholm by 2030, a goal that they have deemed unrealistic. Previously, this target was part of a joint commitment with other political groups to tackle the housing crisis in the Swedish capital.
Anna König Jerlmyr, the Moderate leader in Stockholm, stated that despite the initial ambition, the target is not feasible under current circumstances. “We want to be honest with Stockholmers,” Jerlmyr explained. “The economic forecast and bureaucratic hurdles make this goal unattainable.”
This withdrawal has sparked criticism from the Social Democrats, who accuse the Moderates of abandoning their responsibilities. Karin Wanngård, the Social Democrat spokesperson, condemned the decision, arguing it would exacerbate the housing shortage problem.
The housing agreement, which included other political parties, was originally established in response to the rapidly growing demand for housing in Stockholm, driven by both domestic migration and international immigration.
Meanwhile, housing experts argue that creative solutions and regulatory reforms are essential to address the underlying issues. They suggest that the abandonment of such targets reflects a need for more realistic and adaptable strategies.
