A price cap on single tickets? Electric scooters included in the SL card? Or perhaps completely free transport for students? As elections draw closer, proposals from the various parties regarding public transport fares in Stockholm are multiplying and diverging more and more from one another.
Despite differences in the details, there is one common thread uniting most political formations: ticket prices must come down. The general trend points toward cheaper public transport as a tool to attract more passengers and reduce private vehicle use in the Stockholm region.
There is, however, one notable exception. The Moderates are the only party to have openly announced their intention to raise fares, positioning themselves at the opposite end of the political spectrum in this debate — a stance that will undoubtedly set them apart during the election campaign.
Electoral promises related to SL — Stockholm’s regional public transport operator — have become one of the hottest topics of the moment, especially in a city where the cost of living remains a central concern for many residents.
