The Moderates in Stockholm Region have raised their voices against the housing figures included in the new regional development plan, a document that sets the urban roadmap through 2060. Speaking from the opposition, regional councillor Axel Conradi (M) did not hesitate to describe the proposal as regressive and out of touch with residents’ real needs.
‘We should be building more single-family homes, but this plan goes in exactly the opposite direction. It assumes that new large-scale apartment blocks will have to be built — something reminiscent of the old mass construction programmes of the 1960s and 1970s,’ said Conradi, who sees the approach as an ideological imposition rather than a technical response to housing demand.
The Moderate politician went so far as to describe the plan’s approach as a ‘social democratic-style forced mix,’ questioning the imposition of a dense, collective city model without taking into account the preferences of those seeking a different type of housing. For the Moderates, the plan ignores growing demand for lower-density residential areas and bets on a model they consider both outdated and politically biased.
The debate over the future of housing in Sweden’s capital region is set to intensify as discussions progress on this far-reaching plan, which will define Stockholm’s urban growth for the coming decades.
