Alarm bells have not stopped ringing around the Cosmic medical records system, used in healthcare facilities across Sweden. Reports of failures and serious operational problems have multiplied to the point that the Swedish government has announced the creation of an investigative commission — referred to as a ‘disaster inquiry’ — with the goal of preventing what authorities describe as potential chaos in the management of clinical records.
However, Stockholm Region, which has already signed the contract to acquire the system, has decided not to alter its plans and will move forward with the implementation of Cosmic according to the original schedule. Regional officials argue that the rollout will continue without modifications, despite the national controversy and warnings received from other regions already working with the platform.
The case highlights the tension between regional administrations — which manage their healthcare systems autonomously — and the warning signals coming from both the political sphere and other territories that have experienced difficulties with the same software. Cosmic is one of the most widely used electronic health record systems in the Swedish healthcare sector, meaning any issues with its operation become a matter of national concern.
