OpenAI has updated its usage policies to explicitly prohibit weapons development and unauthorized military use of ChatGPT, following criticism it received for previously allowing military applications.
The company has published new guidelines stating that ChatGPT cannot be used to develop weapons of mass destruction, autonomous attack systems, or any application that could cause large-scale harm.
This update comes after OpenAI removed a clause last January that banned military use of its tools, a move that sparked controversy and drew criticism from artificial intelligence ethics experts.
The new policies also prohibit the use of the technology for mass surveillance, disinformation, and political manipulation, seeking to establish clearer boundaries around permitted applications of its artificial intelligence.
However, some critics point out that these policies are difficult to enforce in practice, and that OpenAI needs more robust mechanisms to ensure compliance.
