Stockholm police have issued a public warning following a series of thefts in recent days specifically targeting people cycling through the city centre. Officers describe the perpetrators as ‘bicycle pirates’ — a new method of operation involving the snatching of bags and belongings from cyclists while they are either moving or stopped on public roads.
The incidents have been concentrated mainly in the Kungsholmen neighbourhood, although authorities have not ruled out that the same gang or method may be operating in other central areas of the Swedish capital. In just one week, several confirmed cases have been recorded, raising alarm among residents and regular cycling commuters.
Police are urging the public to exercise extra caution, particularly when it comes to carrying bags hanging from handlebars or in areas easily accessible from outside. They recommend securing belongings carefully and staying alert to anyone who approaches suspiciously while riding.
This type of theft, while not entirely new in other European cities, represents a relatively recent phenomenon in Stockholm and highlights the need to adapt everyday security habits to the routine use of bicycles in urban environments.
