Last Friday, Djurgården was transformed into a corner of medieval Scandinavia as dozens of Viking culture enthusiasts came together to commemorate International Viking Day in Stockholm. The festive atmosphere was filled with period costumes, live demonstrations, and a deep love for Nordic traditions.
One attendee who drew particular attention was Michaela Mass, who presents herself as a modern valkyrie. Far from limiting herself to historical re-enactment, Michaela carries a broader message: the figure of the Viking woman deserves to be rescued from obscurity and restored to the place of honour it rightly holds.
‘The valkyrie gathers the fallen in battle and leads them to paradise. I want to do something similar for women — lift them up and give them visibility,’ Mass declared with conviction.
Her stance reflects a growing debate in Norse history and archaeology circles, where recent research has shown that Viking women played far more active and significant roles than popular culture has conveyed for centuries. Warriors, traders, and leaders: the Viking woman was much more than a supporting character.
The celebration at Djurgården brought together families with children and seasoned historical re-enactors alike, turning the Stockholm park into a meeting point between past and present.
