A Brazilian Supreme Court justice has given Elon Musk’s social network X — formerly known as Twitter — 24 hours to comply with orders issued by the court, or face suspension across the country.
Justice Alexandre de Moraes issued the ultimatum after X failed to appoint a legal representative in Brazil, as required by local law. The platform had previously shut down its local office following disputes with Brazilian authorities over content moderation and the removal of certain accounts.
Moraes has been at the center of several confrontations with Musk, who has publicly criticized the justice and accused him of censorship. The Brazilian judge has ordered the blocking of several accounts on the platform linked to individuals investigated for allegedly plotting a coup following the 2022 presidential election.
X has repeatedly refused to comply with some of these removal orders, leading to escalating tensions between the company and Brazilian judicial authorities. If the platform fails to meet the 24-hour deadline, Justice Moraes has the authority to order internet providers in Brazil to block access to the site entirely.
Brazil represents one of X’s largest markets globally, with tens of millions of active users. A suspension would mark one of the most significant government-ordered shutdowns of a major social media platform in a democratic country.
