This Tuesday, the centre of Stockholm was the setting for a moving environmental celebration: the traditional Laxsläppet, or Salmon Release, in which ten thousand sea trout were freed into the waters beside the Swan Staircase, in the very heart of the Swedish capital.
The event, which takes place every year, brought together entire families, with both children and adults actively taking part in the activity. The occasion carries not only recreational value, but also ecological significance, as it forms part of broader efforts to restore the natural balance of urban aquatic ecosystems.
Oliver Karlöf, fishing consultant for the City of Stockholm, underlined the importance of the initiative: “We need more predatory fish — their scarcity is a serious problem,” he said. According to experts, the lack of species such as sea trout directly affects the balance of local aquatic wildlife, and releases like this one help to address that deficit.
The sea trout, known in Swedish as havsöring, is a species highly valued both ecologically and for sport fishing, and its presence in Stockholm’s waters is considered a key indicator of the environmental health of the city’s rivers and lakes.
