A new independent audit carried out by consulting firm KPMG has examined the operations of psychiatric care companies Wemind and Prima in the Stockholm region, concluding that it is not possible to establish ‘contractual breaches of an essential nature’ on the part of either company.
However, the report is not without criticism of the management model in place. The auditors identify a poorly defined distribution of responsibilities among the various actors within the system, as well as insufficient communication with primary care — two aspects that, according to the document, hinder care coordination and could negatively impact the quality of care provided to patients.
The analysis comes amid growing scrutiny of private psychiatry in the Swedish capital, where various voices have recently questioned whether the contracted companies are genuinely meeting the requirements set out in their agreements with the region. The KPMG report aims to bring an objective and independent perspective to a debate that has, until now, been marked by controversy.
Although the findings largely exonerate the companies from the most serious accusations, the organisational deficiencies identified leave the door open for regional authorities to demand improvements in the coordination of the psychiatric system and in communication channels between the different levels of care.
