A cycling stretch located between the islands of Lilla Essingen and Stora Essingen in Stockholm has drawn attention for its alarmingly reduced dimensions. According to measurements taken on-site by the SVT team, the lane width ranges between 40 and 45 centimeters, which could make it one of the narrowest bike lanes in all of Sweden.
The situation has not gone unnoticed by those who live in the area and use this route daily. Åsa Schwieler, a resident of Stora Essingen, bluntly describes the risk of riding through that stretch: “Imagine a November morning with strong winds just as the bus goes by. At that moment, there is a real risk of a fatal accident,” she warns.
The documented dimensions raise legitimate concerns among cyclists and local residents, particularly in adverse weather conditions or when large vehicles and bicycles share the same space. A lane less than half a meter wide leaves virtually no safety margin, calling into question whether this infrastructure meets minimum road safety standards.
The finding reopens the debate about the state of cycling infrastructure in the Swedish capital and the need to review those points where the safety of the most vulnerable road users is compromised.
