The man who was found guilty last year of several terrorism-related offenses, after plotting to poison visitors to the Eurovision Song Contest with cyanide, will be allowed to continue his chemistry studies at the KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm. This has been determined by a ruling issued by a Swedish administrative court.
The court’s decision is a setback for those who had hoped that a terrorism conviction would result in the student’s expulsion from the academic institution. However, the court found that there are insufficient legal grounds to prevent him from continuing his university education, despite the severity of the crimes for which he was sentenced.
The case had generated considerable controversy in Sweden, given that the defendant used his knowledge of chemistry to plan the attack. The possibility that he may resume his studies in that same field has reignited the debate about the limits of the academic system when it comes to handling situations involving individuals convicted of extremely serious offenses.
