A cardiac arrest and approximately ten runners requiring medical attention were the most notable incidents recorded during this year’s Stockholm Marathon. Despite the seriousness that such situations can imply, race officials do not consider what happened to be out of the ordinary.
Mats Hedenström, Director of Operations for the Stockholm Marathon, played down the alarm over the incidents: ‘It is not an unusual situation,’ he stated, emphasizing that in events of this scale — where thousands of amateur and professional athletes push themselves to extreme physical limits — medical services are always prepared to intervene in any eventuality.
Medical teams deployed along the course responded quickly to the various reported cases. Authorities have not provided further details on the condition of those affected, though the organization confirmed that the necessary assistance was provided in all cases.
The Stockholm Marathon is one of the most important long-distance races in northern Europe, drawing thousands of participants each year to the streets of the Swedish capital.
