Where Norrtälje Politicians Agree on Climate: More Buses and Better Public Transport

Around fifty people gathered on Tuesday evening at the Folkets hus in Norrtälje to attend a debate in which local parties were questioned about the municipality’s climate action plan. The atmosphere was marked by disagreements between political groups, with clearly opposing positions on several items on the agenda.

However, amid the differences, SVT looked beyond the debate and asked two of the most prominent figures in local politics to identify the areas where they actually do agree. The answer was clear: improving public transport and increasing bus frequency across the municipality is a shared priority, regardless of political affiliation.

Norrtälje, like many rural municipalities in Sweden, faces the challenge of reducing emissions in a territory where private car use remains practically essential for a large part of the population. In that context, strengthening bus connections emerges as one of the few measures on which there is genuine consensus among political representatives, beyond the usual disputes over timelines, funding, and priorities.

Tuesday’s debate is part of the campaign ahead of the upcoming municipal elections, in which climate and sustainability have taken on greater prominence on the local agenda.
